Chinese robots can run and dance, but can't do the dishes yet

Several Chinese companies, such as X Square Robot, are focused on demonstrating that humanoid robots are not just about performing impressive movements but also about providing real value in everyday, unpredictable settings. While many robots can run or dance, they still can't handle simple household chores like washing dishes. The key difference is that stage skills don’t automatically translate to practical usefulness in daily life.

The goal of these companies is to develop robots that can adapt to the complexities of homes and other common spaces. However, the reality is that there’s still a long way to go. The main challenge lies in managing diverse objects, understanding vague instructions, and adjusting to unexpected changes.

Currently, progress in mobility and coordination is impressive, but manipulating objects and interacting with cluttered environments remain significant hurdles. The tech community recognizes that true utility in daily life depends on overcoming perception, dexterity, and flexibility challenges. Innovation continues, but it will take time before these robots can replace humans in simple household tasks.
