I Am Legend 2 moves forward at Warner Bros., confirms director Steven Caple Jr.

Warner Bros. is moving ahead with I Am Legend 2, with reports confirming that Steven Caple Jr., director of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, is now developing the sequel. The original film, released in 2007, was a post-apocalyptic action-thriller loosely based on Richard Matheson's 1954 novel. Will Smith starred as Robert Neville, a U.S. Army virologist who appears to be the last human survivor in New York City after a man-made virus turns humanity into a zombie-vampire hybrid. Neville, immune to the disease, searches for a cure while battling extreme loneliness and dangerous creatures.

Collider revealed that during an interview about the Netflix remake of Man on Fire, Caple Jr. confirmed he is officially working on I Am Legend 2 for Warner Bros., alongside other projects for Paramount. This marks the first substantial update since 2024, when Michael B. Jordan, who starred in Sinners, mentioned that the script was still unfinished but expressed excitement about working with Smith once filming began. Smith also shared that the project was progressing well, with solid ideas in place, and he hoped to share the screen with Jordan. Screenwriter and producer Akiva Goldsman, who co-wrote the first film, is set to return to write the script. The story will feature a significant time jump, considering the alternate ending where Smith’s character survives, which is now considered canon.

In a 2023 interview with Deadline, Goldsman explained that the sequel will start several decades after the original, inspired by series like The Last of Us, which depicts a world recovering after a long postapocalyptic period. The film will explore how Earth reclaims itself and what happens when humans cease to be the dominant species, with a strong visual focus on New York City. The narrative will stay closer to the original Matheson novel, exploring the idea that humanity’s time as the planet’s main species has ended, allowing for a more faithful adaptation of the source material.
