Jon Favreau admits he disagreed with Iron Man’s death in Endgame

The death of Iron Man in Avengers: Endgame remains one of the most iconic moments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It marked a pivotal point in the story and deeply affected fans who watched Tony Stark sacrifice himself to defeat Thanos. From the first Iron Man film, that character was central to the saga, and his farewell left a lasting emotional impact.

However, Jon Favreau, who directed, produced, and appeared as Happy Hogan in the Iron Man movies, was initially against the idea of Iron Man dying. In a recent interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Favreau admitted that although he thought the decision might impact viewers, he now believes the Russo brothers handled it perfectly.

Favreau shared: “I talked to the Russos, and I told them I thought it would really hit people hard, especially kids who grew up with that character. But I have to say, they did such a great job, with Gwyneth Paltrow and Robert Downey Jr. giving incredible performances, that it added a lot of poignancy. I was wrong, I admit it.”

The director added: “It moved me a lot because, even though it’s a movie, those characters have been part of my life for a long time.” Some fans feel the MCU hasn't matched the emotional weight of Iron Man’s death since. Still, the Russo brothers are returning with Avengers: Doomsday this December and Avengers: Secret Wars next year. Robert Downey Jr. will also return, not as Iron Man, but as Doctor Doom.

Meanwhile, Joe Russo confirmed that the upcoming re-release of Endgame in theaters will include new footage considered “critical” to the story of Doomsday. Instead of behind-the-scenes clips or unseen scenes from Endgame, the added content will relate to the new movie, raising questions about whether Iron Man’s death might be connected to these new details.
