Original FIFA Enters Video Game Hall of Fame
33 years after its release, the title that launched an iconic franchise receives a well-deserved recognition at the Strong National Museum of Play.

The legendary FIFA International Soccer, the game that birthed one of the most successful franchises in the gaming industry, has been officially inducted into the World Video Game Hall of Fame at the Strong National Museum of Play. This prestigious honor, located in Rochester, New York, arrives just months before the 2026 World Cup, set to be held across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
The title, originally released in December 1993 for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, is now recognized by the museum as "the most popular sports franchise of all time." This designation underscores the cultural, technological, and commercial impact FIFA International Soccer has had on the interactive entertainment industry over the decades.
The 2026 edition of the Hall of Fame welcomes FIFA International Soccer alongside three other notable titles: Angry Birds, Dragon Quest, and Silent Hill. With these additions, the museum's total collection now stands at 53 games, each selected for its indelible mark on the creation, distribution, and consumption of video games. The selection process looks beyond sales figures to consider each title's overall influence.
FIFA International Soccer's impact was immediate and global. While not the first soccer video game, it undeniably marked the beginning of the best-selling digital sports franchise. Its release coincided with the lead-up to the 1994 World Cup in the United States, an event that significantly boosted soccer's popularity in the North American market and, by extension, the game itself.
According to reports from the era, the game sold over half a million units in its first four weeks in Europe, becoming the best-selling title of 1993 on the continent. Jeremy Saucier, Vice President of Interpretation and Electronic Games at the Strong National Museum of Play, described FIFA's debut as an "instant hit," highlighting its global reach surpassing other popular sports titles due to the official FIFA license and an ambitious, television-like aesthetic.
A unique aspect of the first FIFA was its use of the FIFA brand and national teams, but without featuring real player names, clubs, or leagues. Player names within the game were fictional, inspired by the developers themselves, such as Janco Tiano, derived from lead programmer Jan Tian. The game also nearly launched in North America as "Team USA Soccer," but the name that would define its international character was ultimately chosen.
Visually, FIFA International Soccer stood out with its isometric camera, which simulated a television broadcast perspective, offering notable modernity for its time. The game featured 48 national teams and 20 players per squad, an ambitious scale that foreshadowed the World Cup's future expansion to 48 participants, aiming to replicate the highest possible realism in a soccer game.
This recognition arrives amidst a period of change for the franchise, marked by the split between EA and FIFA in 2022. Since 2023, the series has been rebranded as EA Sports FC, concluding nearly 30 years of collaboration. The franchise, which had sold over 325 million units worldwide by 2021, continues its legacy under a new name, while FIFA explores its own video game developments for future events.
