Alabama water utility reveals it stopped adding fluoride years ago
Birmingham residents were recently informed that their water utility discontinued fluoridation, only to discover the change actually took place years ago.
Residents of Birmingham, Alabama, were abruptly informed earlier this month that their water utility had decided to stop adding fluoride to the city's water supply. However, the situation took a turn when it was revealed days later that the utility had actually ceased fluoridation years ago.
On March 20, Central Alabama Water (CAW) officially announced the discontinuation of water fluoridation. The utility cited "aging equipment" and "increasing maintenance and component replacement costs" as the primary justifications for the move, which had already occurred. Interestingly, the announcement also highlighted unsubstantiated health concerns and pointed out that consumers can obtain fluoride through toothpaste and mouthwash to protect their teeth.
Emphasizing "questions about long-term health effects," CAW stated that ending drinking water fluoridation allows customers and healthcare providers to make more individualized decisions regarding fluoride use.
