Google plans to invest up to $40 billion in Anthropic to lead AI
Google aims to strengthen its position in artificial intelligence with a potential investment of up to $40 billion in Anthropic, starting with $10 billion upfront.

Google is reportedly preparing to invest as much as 40 billion dollars in Anthropic, according to Bloomberg. The deal would include an initial payment of 10 billion dollars in cash, with the possibility of adding another 30 billion if the startup hits certain performance targets. This move comes at a time when Anthropic has ramped up its fundraising efforts following the success of Claude Code, an AI agent that accelerates software development and has become a key tool for Silicon Valley engineers, including some Google employees.
Anthropic was valued at 350 billion dollars in its latest funding round, the same as in February 2026, excluding recent funds. In April, the startup announced a 5 billion dollar investment from Amazon, with an option to add another 20 billion. Since raising 30 billion in February, some investors have backed a valuation of 800 billion dollars or more for the company.
Google Cloud is one of Anthropic’s major clients, providing chips and cloud services. Google is looking to expand these business areas as its main revenue source—search advertising—matures. Under the agreement, Google Cloud will supply Anthropic with five gigawatts of computing capacity over five years, with the option to increase this capacity. To put it in perspective, a gigawatt can power around 750,000 homes in the U.S.
Google’s stock rose over 1% after the news broke. Google’s TPU chips, which compete with Nvidia’s, are becoming a valuable resource for AI development, demanding massive computing power. In 2025, Google announced it would provide up to a million TPU chips to Anthropic, in a deal valued in the tens of billions, after investing about 3 billion dollars in the startup.
The relationship between Google and Anthropic is close, as CEO Dario Amodei previously worked at Google as an AI researcher and founded the company in 2021 with ex-OpenAI employees. While both companies collaborate, they also compete to develop AI capable of matching human abilities, in a rapidly evolving sector.
